Guidelines

Simfile Expectations

  • We are looking for technical simfiles, similar to what you'd find in the East Coast FA series, Mute Sims series, Sudziosis series, Valex's 4-Arrow Magical Adventure series, FA and Chill series, SwageSteps series, and the BemaniBeats series. Links to these packs can be found on AIJ, r21Freak, or Facebook.
  • This time, your submission package for each round should consist of TWO simfiles. Use this as an opportunity to showcase (hah) your wider stepmaking talents. Maybe even branch out in difficulty, and show your skills in easier charts as well as harder charts. We’re looking for originality and variety! Your two files in each round will be decoupled and judged separately, and cash prizes will be awarded to entrants with the highest performance; the rubric section below covers this in detail.
  • There is no difficulty minimum or maximum, but we are looking for primarily 10s - 12s. It will be tough to properly evaluate anything easier than a 10, and anything harder than a 12 runs the risk of having too much of a stamina requirement, distracting from the technical focus we want to see. This isn't to deter you from submitting anything easier or harder, but be conscious of the contest goals. A 13 was one of the most highly-rated charts of Technical Showcase 1 Round One, so do not be afraid to push the limits!
  • There is no length minimum or maximum, but between 1:45 - 2:45 will be most appropriate.
  • While there is a rubric we will be grading these files upon, be creative! There is no textbook definition of how a high quality simfile should look.

Submission Guidelines

  • Your simfile should be completely anonymous. Be sure to remove any credits or traces of your name in your simfile. (The administrator will double-check, and reprimand you if necessary.)
  • The .sm, .ssc, and/or .dwi files should contain nothing more than the song title, song artist, and anything chart-related (BPMs, stops, the chart itself, etc.).
  • Files should be SM3.95-compatible. Not all judges may be using SM5 or other builds of StepMania that support extended chart elements (lifts, fakes, etc.).
  • Please do not include any custom graphics. You can use the TS3 graphics, which are available in Downloads.
  • More specific guidelines on how to submit your simfile will be included in the Submit a File page.

Grading Rubric

All simfile submissions will be graded by the four judges based on five different categories. Each category consists of either 10 or 5 points. A judge can grade a file up to 45 points, but the lowest judged score will be removed from the total. Therefore, the maximum amount of points a simfile can receive is 135.

Key note that all judges have specific tastes on what they believe is a quality simfile, so opinions will vary.

After all the simfiles have been judged, the entrants are ranked by a weighted average of their submission package. Each entrant's higher-performing simfile is weighted 3:1 against their lower-performing simfile.

For example, Entrant A chooses to play it safe, and writes two respectable but unimpressive 110pt. simfiles.

Entrant A's overall score is (¾ × 110) + (¼ × 110) = 110 points.

Meanwhile, Entrant B takes two different but risky approaches. Their first simfile is panned with 70pt., but their second simfile is a 130pt. hit!

Entrant B's overall score is (¾ × 130) + (¼ × 70) = 115 points.

Rounds and Advancement

At the start of the contest, all entrants will compete in the first round to determine who will go to the finals. When the judges reveal their scores for the first round, all simfiles will be ranked by total points in descending order. The top three simfiles will be rewarded with cash money prizes.

The top 40% ranked entrants from Round 1 will be qualified to move onto the Grand Finals. Each entrant will submit a new pair of simfiles, which are decoupled, judged, and ranked on the same individual basis as in the first round. There will be cash money prizes for the top four simfiles in Grand Finals.
